Pro Se Legal Consulting
Not every person needs—or is financially able to retain—an attorney for full representation. Some individuals need focused legal advice, help understanding a particular issue, or strategic support while continuing to represent themselves.
VSHF’s Pro Se Legal Consulting service provides behind-the-scenes legal advice and support to individuals who remain self-represented. VSHF does not file a Notice of Appearance or become the attorney of record. Instead, the client retains our office to provide specific consulting services within an agreed-upon written scope.
Pro Se Legal Consulting may include:
- Reviewing pleadings, court orders, discovery, and other case materials
- Helping identify legal and factual issues requiring attention
- Discussing litigation strategy and possible next steps
- Reviewing or assisting with draft pleadings and correspondence
- Reviewing proposed parenting plans or settlement terms
- Organizing evidence and developing case chronologies
- Preparing clients for mediation, deposition, hearings, or trial
- Conducting research or analysis concerning specific legal issues
- Helping clients understand procedural requirements and their responsibilities as self-represented litigants
Pro Se Legal Consulting does not include communicating with the opposing party or opposing counsel, filing documents, appearing in court, or assuming responsibility for the entire case. The client remains responsible for meeting deadlines, filing and serving documents, communicating with the court and other parties, and appearing on their own behalf.
When VSHF assists with the preparation of a document that a self-represented client will file, the client and VSHF will comply with any acknowledgment or disclosure required by the applicable Florida rules.
Understanding Our Services and Fees
Victims’ Safe Harbor Foundation is a 501(c)(3) social impact organization. However, VSHF is not currently grant-funded and does not provide free legal consulting services. Clients are responsible for the fees associated with the services they request.
Pro Se Legal Consulting generally requires a lower initial retainer and is offered at a lower hourly rate than direct representation. This may provide a more financially manageable option for individuals who cannot retain an attorney to handle every aspect of their case but would benefit from informed legal advice and strategic support.
